CAUSE AND EFFECT
January 20: Winston Salem, North CarolinaA Winston-Salem State University football player, Najee Ali Baker, was shot to death at a party on the campus of Wake Forest University. This was the first on campus shooting, however it didn't gain nation wide recognition. This shooting didn't have too big of an impact for nationwide gun control when it happened, but as soon as other shooting started taking place this became significant because it was the first on campus shooting of the year.
January 22: Italy, Texas A 15-year-old student was wounded in a shooting at a high school in Italy, Texas, authorities said. The suspect, also 15, was quickly apprehended. Similar to the shooting above, this wasn't very significant until after more shooting happened, Obviously shooting are going to happen so when one or two take place it isn't as big of a deal. The thing that was concerning however was the fact that the shootings were just two days apart.January 23: Benton, Kentucky A 15-year-old student shot 16 people killing two other 15-year-olds at Marshall County High School, authorities said. The student faces two charges of murder and 12 counts of first degree assault. Once again no body was too concerned with this shooting because minimal people were injured and nobody really spoke out about it. There were no rallies to get peoples attention, and the media didn't pay close attention to it. January 31: Philadelphia A fight led to a shooting in the parking lot of Lincoln High School, fatally wounding a 32-year-old man. This shooting wasn't too big across the U.S because only one man was injured, and as mean as it sounds, when children are injured it's a bigger deal compared to when adults are. February 1: Los Angeles A 15-year-old boy was shot in the head and a 15-year-old girl shot in the wrist at Sal Castro Middle School in Los Angeles, officials said. Two other students were grazed by bullets. A 12-year-old girl was booked for negligent discharge of a firearm in that shooting, which was considered "unintentional," Los Angeles police said. |
February 5: Oxon Hill, Maryland A high school student was shot in the parking lot of Oxon Hill High. The victim was treated and later released. Police arrested two teens and said they are acquaintances of the victim. February 9: NashvilleA high school student was shot five times in the parking lot of Pearl-Cohn High School. February 14: Parkland, Florida A 19-year-old man gunned down students and staff with a rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, slaughtering at least 17 unsuspecting students and adults. The shooter, Nikolas Cruz, had been expelled from the high school over disciplinary problems, officials said. This is when people started to speak ou tmore towards gun violence. The special thing about this was that the majority of people who were speaking out were students. It started with the students who attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High but then quickly spread to school across the nation. Multiple walk outs were held to showcase the importance of gun control. Survivors of the attack were protesting and even giving public speeches that were influencial and emotional. February 24: Savannah, Georgia A person was shot on the campus of Savannah State University and taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. Neither the victim nor the shooter were university students, the college said. February 27: Itta Bena, Mississippi A person was shot in a rec center at Mississippi Valley State University. IMPACTS
SOCIAL: STUDENTS- All of the walk outs and gun control protests have had a huge impact on students. Not only are students across the nation more education on gun control, but they now have more sympathy and emotion toward the subject, whether they are for gun control or against they have been exposed to meaningful events that other generations never experienced. TEACHERS- Because students are scared to come to school, and there is clearly a need for more security, the idea of arming teachers is becoming a serious thought in some peoples minds. Obviously this effects the teachers because now they have to be trained and able to handle the weapon properly. PARENTS- With the new need for increased security around school parents are worried to send their children to school and are more susceptible to be willing to pay more in taxes to go to school security. GOVERNMENT- It's one thing when adults are protesting, but kids!? The government has a serious problem to consider because yes it is their job to protect the citizens of the United States, but it is also their job to maintain a democracy and fight for what the people want. ECONOMIC: PARENTS: All the parents who are worried about sending their kids to school, and are worried about gun control are more willing to spend money on security measures for the community and schools. COMMUNITY: The community will be expected to make more changes if the people want more gun control so as a result the citizens will have to pay more money to compensate for all the changes. GUN STORES: Although this is highly unlikely, gun stores may have to raise their prices to make it more difficult to get a gun and because of that they might loose customers. GLOBAL: OTHER COUNTRIES: The U.S isn't the only country to struggle with gun control. Many other countries have some of the same issues. Gun control and #neveragain in America is a movement and is being taken more seriously because of the protests. In other countries, guns are handled differently and their main use can not be argued as self defense. |
GAINED:
Gun control has been a huge issue but in the past the only people who were getting involved were adults and politicians. Now, with the gained awareness, we have grabbed the attention of young generations and teens and have encouraged them to speak out. Because of the movement, gun control has gained the support of so many people who sympathize with those who were effected by the shooting.
LOST:
The Never Again movement has had tons of success. But we can't forget about the loss. The reason the Never Againmovement is even a thing is because on February 14, 2018
